Is it truely more cost effective to purchase a manual, as opposed to converting auto to manual?
himinaru asked:
I would like to get a manual transmission car, but unfortunately none of them fall into my price range of $7000. At least for my local area, which I don't want to travel out of.

The car I am thinking of getting, now, is a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier. Like I said, it's a 4spd auto, and I would like it to be a manual.
I am assuming that you can't just salvage or buy a new 5spd. manual, and swap them out?
I can live with an automatic, but what all would I have to do for such a modification?

Manual transmissions are chaeper than auto, if you were to go to a car manufacturer's web site and create a car, you will see that they all come standark with manual tranny, and automatic is an upgrade for extra money.
You can make an auto a manual, but there is a lot to do, unless your good at stuff like that, then I wouldn't attempt it. You need the petal, all the linkage, unless it hydrolic, then your in for a big heap of problems, and then there's removing the old ****** and fly wheel, it's just easier to buy a car that's manual.

you could switch them, its not easy but there are harder things to do out there. your much better off buying a manual, chevy make a ton of cavaliers, if your patient you will find your ideal car. it took me almost five years to find my perfect car. if you need a car now however you may just have to settle for the automatic.

You would have to get the manual tranny, clutch, pressure plate and new clutch/brake pedals and hardware. I'm not sure if you would need to change the bell housing too. Plus, your car's rear gear ratio was determined with the auto ****** in mind, and you don't necessarily have to change the rear gears but you might want to do that for better drivability. I would say that since a Cavalier is relatively inexpensive car you'd be better off swapping…

It would be so cost prohibitive to do it that you would be better off keeping the Automatic version. If you have to have as stick you will just have to expand your search area.

Every cav. I have seen for the past decade had a auto. ****** as standard equip. The fastest shifts made on the dragstrip is done with an auto.Think about it?Do you really want a stick shift?
